LTE comes to the 3GPP with its own core network functions. In order to reduce the number of layers, the eNodeB is communicating directly with the Serving GW on the data path. Furthermore, in order to be able to control in a more efficient manner the connectivity of the mobile devices, the 3GPP EPC includes a Mobility Mangement Entity (MME), present only on the control data path.

OpenEPC includes an MME and an eNodeB emulation for the communication in the core network and the interfaces towards the Serving GW and to the HSS. Through the current implementation, various scenarios related to the LTE access network can be demonstrated such as the attachment and the detachment from the access network as well as the default and dedicated bearer reservations. OpenEPC LTE extension can be used to demonstrate vertical handovers from and to the LTE access network.
