                Fraunhofer FOKUS Competence Center NGNI

The Fraunhofer FOKUS competence center Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) provides the expertise and technologies for implementing innovative, seamless multimedia applications enabled by emerging Open Service Delivery Platforms (SDPs) on top of converging heterogeneous network technologies, such as fixed and mobile telecommunication networks, Next Generation Networks (NGNs), Next Generation Mobile Networks, the Internet and the Future Internet (FI).

                FOKUS research and testbed mission

                FOKUS research and testbed mission

The main services offered by NGNI comprise technology coaching, component and solution prototype and proof of concept implementations as well as conformance testing for fixed and wireless Next Generation Networks and Service Delivery Platform technologies.

Technical foundation for these services provides the FOKUS NGN testbed, which integrates both FOKUS developments as well as partner products to reflect the state of the art. Core of this testbed form the related technology playgrounds, such as the Open IMS Playground with its main item, the Open Source IMS Core (OSIMS) downloadable from www.openimscore.org.

In summer 2007 NGNI has opened the Open SOA Telco Playground, an open testbed for experiencing and validating  the development,  provisioning, execution, and management of converging Next Generation Network and Future Internet applications based on SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) principles.

In November 2009 we showed a first demonstration of OpenEPC  developed and supported by Fraunhofer FOKUS competence center NGNI and Technische Universität Berlin - AV at 5th FOKUS IMS Workshop 2009. In April 2010 Release 1 of OpenEPC was launched with support for mobility management and roaming configuration support and support for subscription management and policy control.

In May 2010 we will launch the FUSECO Playground - an Open Technology and Applications Testbed for Future Seamless Communication (FUSECO), integrating various state of the art wireless broadband networks into a 3GPP Evolved Packet Core (EPC) prototype platform, allowing the rapid validation of new networking paradigms, and prototyping of innovative Future Internet and smart city applications.
