For a network operator to be able to provide a complete vertical integration from the access networks to the applications, an important issue is how the IMS sessions will be handled by the wireless core network.
This scenario shows the inter-working between the IMS and the EPC platforms. The Fraunhofer FOKUS OpenIMS Core is used together with the OpenEPC, providing a complete testbed for the next generation of mobile networks.
A mobile device with IMS capability is used. When it registers to the IMS core, a new set of the default resources are allocated for the IMS signalling separated and with higher priority than the other resources allocated to the mobile device.
When an IMS service is established, the OpenEPC is reserving the required throughput with a high level of prioritization which enables the IMS service to preempt any other service which may be used over the same link. The effect is perceived in the quality of the service delivered regardless of the current available resources the network.
